ADAM'S DREAM

ADAM'S DREAM

The sycamores and sidewalks of
His neighborhood were private park
And dark retreat, where he could walk
In congress sweet

With his kind neighbors, sleep and love,
And where their gossip, or nice talk,
Discriminated beast from bird
By proper word:

Adam yawned, and there were cats;
Blinked, and there were antelopes;
Stretched, and everywhere he reached
A mile of meadow bloomed.

He cocked his eye, and fishes leaped
In every brook to praise him;
He rose to walk, and rabbits ran
As couriers to every green
Community to tell of him.

He only glanced at any tree,
Its birds at once began to sing;
He nodded, and the region budded;
He put the bloom on everything.

He was the lord of all the park,
And he was lonely in the dark,
Till Eve came smiling out of his side
To be his bride.
